When Doves Cry – Prince  Lyrics

October 1, 2008

Album: Purple Rain
Genre:  Rock, Funk, Pop
Released:  1984

This song was composed by Prince for the movie Purple Rain, a 1984 film where Prince played “The Kid”, an aspiring and talented, but troubled musician with a difficult life due to his abusive father. The song was #1 in the US for five weeks and was voted as the best single of 1984 in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll. Also, it is the 6th greatest single of all time according to Spin Magazine and Rolling Stone ranked “When Doves Cry” #52 on its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The topic of this song is supposed to be a complaint where Prince talks to God and ask him: “How could you just leave me standing alone in a world that’s so cold?” Many people think the dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit.
